People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
August 2016
Since 2016, PETA has partnered with celebrities in impactful campaigns to protest SeaWorld’s treatment of marine animals. Notable figures include Bella Thorne (2024), Amanda Holden (2018), Noah Cyrus (2016), Dani Harmer (2019), and Rainey Qualley (2021). These campaigns often feature celebrities confined in water tanks or other symbolic imagery to highlight the cramped and unnatural conditions endured by orcas and other animals at marine parks. The earliest example is Krysten Ritter's 2016 campaign, where she posed behind broken glass to symbolize the need to “break free” the orcas. These actions emphasise boycotting SeaWorld and advocating for animal freedom.
