Smithfield Meat Market Takeover

Animal Rebellion

7th October 2019

Animal Rebellion opened their first rebellion campaign with a bold re-imagining of a landmark meat market: Smithfield Market, London UK. They negotiated to occupy the main concourse with vision of what the market could be if it transitioned to a plant-based venue, in response to the climate crisis. The activists set up food stalls, their tents and a stage for speeches and music. The market remained functioning elsewhere, but the workers and activists were kept separate. The occupation included silent protests, vigils, speeches, free food and stories of what could be displayed around the space. The group stayed overnight, leaving the market in their own time to march to DEFRA, their next target in their campaign.
