Wicked the Musical

by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, based on Gregory Maguire's novel

October 2003

Wicked, which premiered on Broadway on October 30, 2003, incorporates powerful messages about animal rights through its depiction of sentient Animals in Oz. Songs like "Something Bad" expose the silencing and systemic oppression of Animals, including their exclusion from society and loss of autonomy. "Defying Gravity" showcases Elphaba's bold stance against this injustice, championing freedom and resistance to cruelty. The treatment of Animals in the musical underscores the importance of recognizing their rights and advocating for their protection, presenting a legitimate critique of exploitation and discrimination in any society.
